EARLY CHILDHOOD NEWS
Ensuring every child has equal access to a high quality education. The Region 6 State Support Team is pleased to share with you that the State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted Ohio’s “Birth-Kindergarten Entry Learning and Development Standards”. The SBOE adopted these standards at their October 9, 2012 meeting. These standards create a seamless continuum of the knowledge and skills that young children develop during the birth to five year period with the support of their early childhood experiences. They would like to recognize the members of the cross-agency state leadership team as well as the cross-agency, multi-disciplinary writing teams that help to draft the new standards. The names of the writing team members can be found with the standards at http://www.build-ohio.org/happening.html. They are also posted on www.education.ohio.gov (search term “early learning and development standards”). Over the next 6 months, ODE and ODJFS will be working to create professional development on these revised standards. Once the professional development is completed, information about the availability of sessions will be broadly distributed.
Governor’s Executive Order promotes employment for people with developmental disabilities
Governor Kasich signed an Executive Order creating the Employment First Task Force, which is charged with promoting meaningful employment opportunities in the community for people with developmental disabilities. A key component of this initiative introduced in the Mid-biennium Review, requires that an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each student with a disability, beginning at age 14, include a strategy for learning about and preparing for employment by establishing postsecondary community employment goals. This is an important part of our overall commitment to ensure that all students are prepared for their next steps when they graduate. To read the executive order visit: http://www.governor.ohio.gov/MediaRoom/ExecutiveOrders.aspx.
